Insufficient bass in the car - We tell you the causes and solutions

Powerful, clean bass is essential for a good sound experience in the car. However, the bass of the factory-installed speakers is often not sufficient to achieve the desired low-frequency reproduction. In this article, you will find out why this is the case and how you can solve the problem.

Why is the bass in the car often inadequate?

  • Small speakers - Standard speakers are often too small and can only reproduce low frequencies to a limited extent.
  • No dedicated subwoofer - Many cars do not have a separate subwoofer specifically responsible for bass reproduction.
  • Insufficient power - The integrated amplifiers of factory radios often do not have enough power to drive bass speakers optimally.
  • Poor vehicle conditions - The interior of a car is acoustically challenging, so bass frequencies can cancel each other out.
  • Incorrect settings - The sound controls or equalizers are often not optimally set for a reasonable bass reproduction.

How you can improve the bass in your car

So there may be one or even several reasons that can lead to poor bass performance. Problem recognized, "danger" averted! The following solutions will help you to massively increase the bass quality in your car.

  • Retrofitting a subwoofer
  • Install amplifier
  • Upgrade speakers
  • Improve insulation
  • Correct placement of the subwoofer
  • Use DSP or equalizer

1. retrofit subwoofer

A subwoofer is the most effective solution for rich bass. You have various options:

  • Active subwoofers: Easy to install as the amplifier is already integrated.
  • Passive subwoofers: Require a separate amplifier, but often offer more power.
  • Spare wheel subwoofer: Space-saving solution that does not restrict the trunk space.

In the AXTON range you will find various subwoofers for a wide variety of applications. Find out more.

2. install amplifier

An external amplifier ensures that the speakers and subwoofer are supplied with sufficient power. This makes the bass more powerful and controlled. You can choose between pure bass amplifiers with just one channel, also known as mono amplifiers. Or you can choose a system amplifier with several channels, e.g. to drive a front system and a subwoofer. AXTON offers you a wide range of amplifiers that are suitable for many different sound concepts. You will also find amplifiers with integrated DSP. Find out more.

3. upgrade speakers

If you don't want a subwoofer, you can opt for larger and more powerful speakers with a strong bass response. Component speakers with stable woofers will help. Make sure that your new speakers have a sufficiently large voice coil diameter and a powerful magnet drive. This will ensure increased power handling even when using an additional amplifier. The Qts of the woofer should ideally be between 0.6 and 0.7 so that it plays optimally in a vehicle door and produces clean bass. All AXTON speakers are optimized for use in cars. Find out more.

4. improve insulation

A loudspeaker is designed to set the air molecules vibrating with its membrane. It does this by the energy supplied, i.e. the music signal, moving the voice coil with the diaphragm attached to it back and forth in the air gap like a piston. However, if the base of the speaker is not stable enough, then not only does the cone push away from the speaker basket, but the speaker basket also pushes away from the cone - an interaction. By insulating with Alubutyl mats, the surface on which the speaker sits is immobilized and much more energy is then required to stimulate this surface or door to vibrate. The result is an even more precise reproduction of the music, especially in the bass range. We also recommend the use of combined damping mats with a special foam layer as a top layer, which additionally reduces acoustic resonances and counteracts bass cancellation.

5 Correct placement of the subwoofer

The location of the subwoofer has a strong influence on the bass effect. Placement in the trunk, with the cone pointing downwards as a downfire or into the trunk, often delivers the best results. A subwoofer directly under the seat can also help to significantly enhance the bass experience. In the AXTON range you will find various subwoofers for a wide variety of applications: Bass reflex, bandpass, downfire, passive cone and many other variants. Find out more.

6. use DSP or equalizer

A digital sound processor (DSP) or equalizer helps you to optimize the bass frequencies in a targeted manner. Depending on the size of the vehicle and the positioning of the speakers, certain bass frequencies may be greatly exaggerated or cancel each other out. With a DSP, you can remove the extreme boosts to achieve a more even frequency response and thus enhance the listening experience. AXTON offers you a selection of different DSP amplifiers, each of which is ideally suited for specific applications. The easy integration into your existing sound system via Plug&Play cables makes our DSP amplifiers all the more interesting for you. Find out more.
