AXTON Story: A Spectacular Sound System for the Dodge Durango, Powered by DSP with the A894DSP

An SUV like the Dodge Durango (2023 model year) impresses with its spaciousness, ride comfort, and rugged appearance. But a large interior always presents acoustic challenges: If the factory-installed sound system sounds flat and lacks a clear spatial separation, the music is practically lost in the spacious cabin. In this project, our installation partner ACR Freilassing demonstrates how to deliver true premium sound to a vehicle like this using a DSP power amplifier from AXTON.

The situation: A large room, but no acoustic stage

The owner of the Dodge Durango felt that the stock audio system lacked, above all, vibrancy and modern customization options. In a vehicle this large, the following shortcomings are particularly noticeable:

  • Lack of spatial depth: The music played indiscriminately somewhere down near the doors, and the sound seemed flat.
  • No sound stage: It was impossible to clearly pinpoint the location of the instruments and voices in the room—it didn't feel like a real concert.
  • Missing Features: The Durango's factory audio system completely lacks modern tools for precise sound correction (DSP).

The Solution: The AXTON A894DSP Smart-DSP Power Amplifier

To perfectly tailor the sound to the seating positions and the acoustics of the Durango, the compact AXTON A894DSP power amplifier was used. With its built-in digital signal processors (DSPs), it allows installation professionals to time and optimize the sound of each individual speaker in the car with centimeter-level precision. The result: The music is positioned exactly where it belongs—right on the dashboard in front of the driver.

The installation highlight from the workshop: The integration went absolutely smoothly for the team at ACR Freilassing. They had high praise for AXTON’s clear instruction manual, which makes connecting the open cable ends a breeze. The subsequent fine-tuning and programming of the DSP via the smartphone app was, as usual, easy and intuitive.

The result: a concert-like atmosphere instead of an empty room

The first listening test after the final calibration immediately won the customer over. Instead of a muddled, diffuse sound, the system now delivers a coherent, tangible musical experience. The owner was extremely pleased with the new sound and the excellent soundstage. The acoustic transformation can be perfectly described with two apt keywords: precise and spacious.

A Pro Tip for a Better Listening Experience

Based on the experience gained from this SUV project, the team at ACR Freilassing emphasizes a fundamental rule of car audio: Proper sound deadening is the be-all and end-all of any audio upgrade. Especially in large vehicles, trim panels and sheet metal parts tend to resonate unnoticed. Solid sound deadening effectively prevents these disruptive vibrations and ensures a noticeably cleaner and more dynamic sound experience. Skimping on sound deadening means squandering the valuable potential of the new technology.
