AXTON Your Story – A New Sound in the BMW E30 Convertible from ACR Erlangen

A true cult classic like the BMW E30 Convertible (1989 model) exudes pure classic car charm and is the perfect vehicle for relaxed summer drives. But after more than three decades, the original factory speakers have seen better days. Damaged cones, a tinny sound, and a lack of clarity take the fun out of driving with the top down. In this project, our installation partner ACR Erlangen demonstrates how to bring back true musical enjoyment to this classic car using precisely fitting and affordable AXTON components—all without altering the historic interior.

The Situation: Broken Speakers in a Classic Car

With this E30 convertible, it was practically impossible to listen to music with the top down. In addition to the natural wear and tear on the technology, the original parts were simply at the end of their useful life:

  • Defective & Worn Out: The old original speakers were mechanically defective and could barely produce any sound.
  • Tinny sound: Without any dynamics, even old classics on the radio weren't fun anymore.
  • Rapid distortion: The system clipped extremely quickly—which was particularly annoying when trying to hear over the wind noise in the convertible.
  • Lack of brilliance: The vocals were practically drowned out by the muffled highs.

The Solution: The AXTON ATX130S Coaxial System

The customer was looking for a sturdy, high-performance, and—above all—affordable replacement that could be integrated seamlessly and discreetly so as not to compromise the original look. The choice fell on the AXTON ATX130S 13-cm coaxial speakers for the front and rear.

The installation highlight from the workshop: AXTON’s 13-series coaxial speakers fit absolutely perfectly into the factory speaker mounts of the BMW E30 Convertible. No modifications to the trim pieces or the vehicle’s body panels are necessary, ensuring that the classic car’s original condition is preserved 100 percent.

The result: the perfect sound for cruising

The first test drive after the quick installation delivered exactly the desired result. The customer was absolutely thrilled that he could now once again enjoy music clearly and with great sound quality while cruising in his “classic car.” The system strikes an excellent balance between affordability and great sound. The new sound can best be summed up in two words: a pleasant bass foundation and clear highs.

The Pro Tip for E30 Mechanics

Anyone who wants to replace the speakers in their E30 themselves or is planning to do so should heed an important expert tip from ACR Erlangen: You must be extremely careful when removing the original speaker covers. After nearly 40 years, the plastic has often become brittle, which means the delicate retaining tabs can break off very easily. A gentle approach using a special plastic prying tool prevents unnecessary hassle and keeps your classic car in one piece. If you’re planning the upgrade during the colder months, the plastic should be gently warmed before removal.
